Welcome to D4 Driver Medicals

The medical is the first step of gaining your HGV or LGV licence. Upon successful completion of the medical you will be granted a provisional (category C) licence.

Usually this medical is required to be renewed at 45 and every 5 years after that, and at 65 it is an annual requirement. You will find the date in column 11 on the back of your driving licence.

There are additional requirements for those who hold restricted licences and also for NI, EU and EEA licence holders whose right to drive Group 2 vehicles in the UK has expired.

Usually you will receive a reminder letter together with a D4 medical form a few weeks before the medical is due.

Student paramedics require a D4 medical to obtain a provisional C1 license, often done in the last year of undergraduate training.

A D4 medical is required in order to drive a motorhome. If you passed before 1997 you will have a C1 license until the age of 70. After this it needs to be renewed every 3 years.
